It’s game time. Escape the ordinary.
Team building activities have changed over the years. Nowadays it is not only about mundane conferences or activities without any other purpose than leisure, but something more than an “outwork activity” is what Human Resource departments want to achieve.
The objective is to motivate the teams, improve the relationship between co-workers and increase their skills.
That’s why escape rooms are a perfect environment for this. It’s a game where teams enter in a room, which has a special atmosphere, and they have a mission. To success on that mission they must work together, figuring out the riddles and mysteries in a limited amount of time. The key are “the three C’s”: communication, cooperation, concentration.
It’s important to highlight that even though it’s a safe situation, the environment, the possible performance of the staff in the escape rooms and the fact of having only 60 minutes push the participants to the limit. Stress and emotion improve each player skills, and encourage group thinking. As we said before, in this rooms teamwork and communication between all players are key as many of the riddles requires the active participation of various teammates. Players quickly realize that if they don’t communicate, they won’t make it to the end. It’s a different way to practice and improve personal development, while being always part of a team tied by the same goal.
Being such an emotional and intense experience while working as a team, has proven to trigger team bonding and improve cohesion – based on our experience. In fact, not just the work, but the shared success improves relationships between the members. Those who contributed to victory, feel satisfied with themselves and their colleagues. In some cases there is the option for two teams to play at the same time, competing with the same challenge – it’s fierce. This promotes a FUN competition between the teams, adding a little bit of tension and increasing the motivation to escape before the other team does.

Escape rooms also offer the opportunity to evaluate each team and teamwork as well as each individual.
Inside the rooms, the players put to test their own skills, showing who are the most creative, who are the ones to “think outside the box”, the ones understanding the riddles, where a different point of view is needed; who are the ones analyzing their surroundings, observing details and items which can be useful throughout the game;
who have better memory and can remember all the things they have seen or someone has told them and last but not least, the logic ones– solving all the math problems.
In this context – no roles are clear, so the informal leader rises up to the challenge,
a colleague in whom everybody trusts and follows blindly (whether or not he/she is the real leader), solving conflicts between players or taking care of someone who has been
left aside by the rest of the team.
Thus, we consider that Team building’s in escape rooms have quite a few advantages aside from Fun – whether it’s to evaluate teams or improving individual skills like teamwork.
